Mizuno, 22, put pen to a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Scottish Premier League champions on Tueday. He will join his compatriot Shunsuke Nakamura at the club and becomes the second Japanese to ply his trade for Celtic.
The transfer was initially suspended when the Department of Employment did not grant him a work permit. Under the regulations, a foreign player is required to play for the national team in a certain number of games in order to secure a permit.
Mizuno, however, did not meet the requirement as he only played for Japan Under-23 qualified in this summer’s Beijing Olympics.
Celtic were keen to sign the talented midfielder and requested for special dispensation to be given to him. Mizuno made his debut for the senior team in a friendly against Peru in March last year before being capped three more times.
Mizuno also featured for Japan in the Asian Cup last July. He started his professional career at J.League side JEF United Chiba – where he featured in 86 matches and scored 13 goals.
The Celtic officials are delighted to have secured Mizuno’s signature before the transfer window closes.
"An exciting midfield player, Koki Mizuno is a tremendous signing for Celtic and supporters will be hoping he can make as big an impact as Shunsuke Nakamura, the current Scottish player of the year," the Scottish club said in a statement.[/size]
