England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has askedTottenham Hotspur for a transfer after being dropped for lastWednesday's Carling Cup semi-final against Arsenal.PaulRobinson wants to leave Tottenham, and manager Juande Ramos will notstand in his way. In fact Spurs are actively encouraging rival PremierLeague clubs to make them offers for the England goalkeeper.
Whenhe was appointed as Spurs manager in October, Ramos quickly identifiedgoalkeeper as a problem position and determined to bring in areplacement for Robinson, the incumbent number one at at White HartLane, claims the Daily Mail.
Ramos has replacements in mind, including Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg. He will also be monitoringCamerooon's Carlos Idriss Kameni (currently with Espanyol) at theAfrican Cup of Nations.
Robinson learned that he had beenreplaced by Radek Cerny for the semi-final against the Gunners whenRamos held a team meeting at 16.30 on Wednesday.
The Englandshot-stopper brooded on the substitutes' bench for the duration of thematch, and demanded a transfer during talks with Spurs officials onThursday.
Robinson had been dropped following Tottenham's 2-2draw with Reading in the FA Cup last Saturday, but it is understoodthat his performance in the 6-4 win over the same opponents at WhiteHart Lane a week earlier had left Ramos particularly unimpressed.
The former Sevilla boss apparently felt that three of Reading's four goals could have been prevented, says the Mail.
Hefinally decided to drop Robinson when Stephen Hunt scored with along-range free-kick last weekend that the goalkeeper caught butinadvertently carried over the line as he stepped backwards.
Thatgoal, and the indignity of being dropped, appear to have spelt the endof Robinson's Spurs career and cap a miserable 12 months for agoalkeeper who was previously so highly regarded for club and country.
Perhaps a change of club will rebuild his confidence, restore his reputation and revive his flagging prospects.
Meanwhile, buying a new goalkeeper is likely to the main bit of business conductedby Tottenham during the current transfer window.
