foul. The Spaniards went into the game knowing anything less than a win wouldn't be enough and their task was made harder with on the half-hour mark when David Albelda was dismissed for a professional foul.

Goalkeeper Santiago Canizares made several fine saves to keep them in the game, but Valencia couldn't find a way through at the other end.

Valencia came flying out the traps in search of the lead and Joaquin sent a shot over the bar.

The home side were continuing to dominate and Vicente's superb cross was met by Joaquin, but he sent his header over the bar.

Schalke gradually found their rhythm and almost took a shock lead when Ivan Rakitic swung in a dangerous corner only for Marcelo Bordon to head over.

The visitors were beginning to look dangerous and Fabian Ernst's shot from inside the area was saved by Canizares.

With half an hour gone the game swung in the Germans' favour as Albelda, making his 75th Champions League appearance, was shown a straight red for a professional foul on Marcio Rafinha.

Schalke immediately set about making the numerical advantage count and Rafinha's cross found Kevin Kuranyi in the area, but he headed over.

Kuranyi also failed with two attempts just before half-time as the visitors continued to put Valencia under pressure.

The early signs in the second half showed the Valencia defence they were going to be in for a difficult 45 minutes as Rakitic's left-foot shot flashed over.

Despite being a man down Valencia were battling away and Vicente fired a warning to Schalke with a shot from the edge of the area that was saved by Manuel Neuer.

However, Kuranyi was still looking dangerous up front for Schalke and Canizares had to be alert to save his shot from 12 yards.

Valencia were looking to hit Schalke on the counter-attack and with 15 minutes remaining David Villa's cross found David Silva on the edge of the area but he fired wide.

However, as the game entered the closing stages the Valencia players were looking tired and Gerald Asamoah should have put Schalke in front, but he headed at Canizares from close range.

Five minutes from time Joaquin almost sent the Mestalla into raptures when his volley from the edge of the box fizzed over.

In injury time Silva also fired wide as Valencia tried in vain to get the win, but they couldn't make the all-important breakthrough.[/size]
